The Volkswagen GTI has come a long way since its first release over 40 years ago. Today, there are multiple generations of GTI available on the market, and each one offers something unique.

MK5 GTI vs. MK6 GTI- Which is a Better Choice?
MK5 and MK6 are two successive generations of Volkswagen Golf. There are no major differences as many parts in the MK6 are identical to MK5. However, there are some minor tweaks on the outside and interior. Some people state that they like the interior of MK6, however, that’s purely subjective. Similarly, the MK6 is equipped with a TSI engine, in comparison to MK5 which has an FSI engine. The engine is also slightly powered up.
If I were to choose between the two, I would say MK6. First, it has a more powerful TSI engine. Second, it has a classier interior. Lastly, being a successor model, it will offer more market value in the future.

MK5 GTI vs. MK6 GTI: Price
MK5 GTI, launched with the name Volkswagen Rabbit in the US and Canadian markets, had a price tag of $20-25k in 2004. However, now, you can easily buy a used one for $5,000-7,000.
Since MK6 is the successor of MK5, its price was slightly high priced than MK5. To be precise, a new MK5 GTI cost around $23-25k. Whereas, now a used MK6 GTI is available for $8,000 to $15,000.
MK5 GTI vs. MK6 GTI: Reliability
Golf GTIs are generally considered very reliable Volkswagen cars. In our case, the first car, MK5 easily lasts more than 150,000 without any major issues. RepairPal gives it a reliability score of 3 out of 5. Due to reliability, MK5 was one of the hot-selling hatchbacks at its launch in 2004.
You won’t face any major issues with the MK6 GTI in the first 180,000 miles as reported by site VW tuning. In terms of statistics, it proves to be more reliable than its predecessor.
However, people have reported issues with failing timing chain tensioners in models 2010 and 2012. So, you avoid buying those models.
MK5 GTI vs. MK6 GTI: Engine and Performance
The Golf MK5 GTI came in a variety of engines across countries. However, the most prominent one in the standard GTIs is a 2.0 Liter, 4-cylinder, Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) Engine.
It is a turbocharged engine with an output of 197 bhp. With this powerful engine, the car can go from 0 to 100 in just 7.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 235 kph (146 mph). MK5 has a fuel economy of 35 MPG (UK) on the highway and 26 MPG (UK) in the city.
MK6 GTI also came in several engine versions. To be precise, there are about 74 engine versions, 36 petrol-based, and 38 diesel-based. All were turbo stratified injection (TSI) engines. The most powerful engine in the MK6 lineup is the 2.0 TSI engine in the Sports variant, which has an output of 270 HP.
The engine can reach 100 kph in just 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kph. Speaking of fuel economy, Golf 6 gives 34 MPG (UK) on the highway and 25 MPG (UK) in the city.

MK5 GTI vs. MK6 GTI: Appearance
MK5 was launched as a 3 and 5-door hatchback. After receiving criticism for being too subdued for a GTI, the MK5 received a facelift that included the restoration of the GTI’s signature red grille trim and the installation of eye-catching alloy wheels. Without a question, VW made progress toward its goal of building another fantastic Golf GTI.
Golf 4’s cabin is tastefully decorated and comfortable, and the blue backlighting on the instruments makes a dramatic difference when used at night. The front passenger has plenty of space, while the back seats are spacious enough for two adults. The front seats are supportive and adjustable, and they have a classic checkered cloth pattern. The cargo space at the back has a capacity of about 350 Liter or 12.4 cubic feet.
MK6 received a minor facelift, tweaks in the suspension, and upgraded 18-inch alloy rims. Like its predecessor, the inside is also comfy and supportive, with leather and fabric seat options. In comparison, to the predecessor GTI, you get a lot more cargo space. If the rear seats are folded, the cargo can hold up to 42 cubic feet. Most owners have stated the MK6’s interior is visually more pleasing than MK5 due to better build quality.
MK5 GTI vs. MK6 GTI: Features and Safety
MK5 obtained a five-star NCAP rating. Furthermore, you get to see six bags for the front, side, and rear impact. There’s an emergency brake assist feature, anti-whiplash, deadlocks, seat belt tensioners, and an electronic safety program. Though it lacks modern driver assistance features, these features are enough for the driver’s safety. Lastly, the wheels of the car have 17-inch alloy rims in the front and back
Like Golf MK5, MK6 also offers similar safety features with some slight addition. It has six airbags at the front, back and sides. There’s an anti-locking braking system, electronic brake force distribution, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring system. Moreover, Golf 6 comes with 18-inch alloy rims in the front and rear.
MK5 GTI: Pros and Cons
MK5 GTI though being the earlier model has a lot of things to offer.
- In comparison to its predecessor, MK5 brought a radical change in the lineup. It was one of the most sold hatchbacks at that time.
- It is an inexpensive hatchback you can get for under $5,000.
- The FSI engine is capable to produce 200 HP and reaching a top speed of 146 mph (235 kph).
However, it has some downsides as well.
- There is a considerable amount of engine noise in the cabin.
- The FSI engine is good but not strong as the TSI engine.
- The suspension is not good enough when driving on bumpy roads.
MK6 GTI: Pros and Cons
Since MK6 GTI is the successor of MK5, it offers a lot of pros:
- It has a new and improved interior design.
- Some tests show noise reduction in the cabin compared to prior generations.
- The engine’s specs have improved as well. You get a TSI engine in the Golf MK6.
- The minor tweaks on the outside make it look classier compared to Golf MK5.
- It offers better suspension and a comfortable ride.
- You get multiple safety features like (TPMS, Traction Control)
However, there are some downsides as well.
- The initial models of the MK6 GTI have problems with the timing chain tensioner.
- With just a few tweaks, the car costs more than MK5 GTI.

MK5 and MK6 are no doubt, very good hatchbacks manufactured by Volkswagen. They mostly share similar parts and accessories.
So, if you need an inexpensive GTI, you can go with MK5. However, MK6 is significantly better in terms of engine power, design, suspension, and overall performance.
